I love the food here. It comes out quickly, has generous portions, and tastes delicious! The servers are friendly and it is clean. I've found that it is just as good as any of the Mexican restaurants I've been to on Lake Street in Minneapolis.

Portions are huge and the food was very good, though they kind of skimp on the meat send load on the onions for their nachos. On the night we went our waitress seemed distracted and 'forgot' about our table when we were close to done. They have a friendly flair and try to use generic Spanish with the customers but it kind of came off as fake/awkward. Over all would eat here again but would skip the desert-they were out of everything except cheesecake and there was probably a reason for that.

I love this restaurant! A friend and I decided to have the fajitas. The problem with fajitas, is that It's easy to get the sauce very greasy. These were not greasy at all. The fajitas were fantastic! We also ordered queso blanco (white cheese dip), and it was also fantastic. The service was great! We were never left with an empty glass. The chips and salsa seemed to stay full at all times, our waiter checked in with us several times, and was very friendly despite being very busy. The food also arrived very quickly, and was hot. I will say that they have a "white salsa", which, in my opinion was pretty gross. It tasted like ranch mixed with miracle whip and some spice. I am sure there will be those that like it.... Not me! However, this is just a personal opinion, and has no bearing on this review. All in all it is a great restaurant as far as large local chain Mexican restaurants go. The prices are a bit steep, and that would be my only compliant. Good experience in all!

Let's just say I was looking forward to trying this place after reading the reviews, but was sooo disappointed. Service was ok, definitely not great. There was 4 of us eating, 2 meals came out, then 3 min later another meal then another 3 minutes the last meal. My mom ordered beef taco salad and my son ordered chicken taco salad. My mom's salad was not a salad it was all warm and mushy. My sons chicken very dry, no salsa or sour cream comes with the salad. When my mom complained to the waitress, she went over and talked to the manager, she came back saying "that's how the salads are". Are you kidding me! No apologies, no customer service at all. Will not go back and would not recommend at all.

Don't come here expecting your run of the mill food that is like Chi-Chi's. I have seen too many customers coming here expecting that it will look and taste like Taco Bell. This place does have good food, for instance, the Jalisco is *awesome!* The chips are okay, although, that never stops me from eating a ton of them. If I were rating on food alone, I would give it a 4. The service is usually questionable though. Either someone does not give you good service or they have WAY too many tables and you never see them. Overall, this is a neighborhood place and we come here about once a month. Just come here for the food and don't expect to be wow-ed by the service. Oh, and if you are a local, bring a coupon, they are usually good Sunday-Thursday.

I really enjoyed this restaurant. Service was very quick and friendly, servings were generous, and the food was all great! My husband and I shared the 'Molcajete Mexicano' - it was huge and sizzling hot!

I think it's fair to say I'm El Loro's #1 fan, because I've gone to almost all of them. I was at an event in Coon Rapids, noticed the sign and realized I was never at this location. I like that it's a stand alone restaurant across the road from all the busyness. I arrived 15 minutes earlier then when they opened, and they sat me down with chips and the famous house made salsa, which was perfectly seasoned, as was the white sauce. I love the chips, very light in texture. Since I didn't want to be stuffed, I got my usual hard shell beef tacos. I'm wondering about the rarity of the hard shell, besides the fast food joints.Only off putting thing was s small puddle of oil on the plate. That would gross out some, but it didn't go through the shell, and the taco itself wasn't greasy. The cheese on top was great and plentiful, even the coarse grate didn't bother me. The food and the service was just so enjoyable. The building is large like most of the others, and I imagine it fills up. The decor is extra nice here, even in the bathroom, and they actually have hot water. Another plus is the contemporary Mexican music, not the standard horn section. The patio looks like it would be enjoyable to eat at, too.

Some of the other locations are hit and miss. Not this one. Maybe the cooks make a difference? Quick /friendly service. Excellent food. Excellent value. The chips were nice and light-freshly cooked. Lunch chicken fajitas- good lean chicken and perfectly cooked onions and peppers $7.99?!?!. Comes with nice plate of beans and guacamole salad. Enchiladas rancheros is two cheese enchiladas topped with tasty slow cooked pork and sautéed vegetables, plus the bean/guaca salad plate- $10.99. Left overs for 1+ meals. Total win at lunch!

My family was in the mood for Mexican food, but really wanted to find a new place with good food. I looked up the YELP reviews and we decided to try El Loro in Coon Rapids. We were not disappointed! The restaurant has great decor, is very clean, extremely friendly staff, and excellent food. The chips are delicious and crispy, the Fajitas Vallarta were delicious, and the pitcher of Dos XX for $10.50 couldn't be beat! We will definitely be back :)

Those who know great food, great service and are looking for an enjoyable well priced place to dine for fast lunch or a lovely family dinner or a quaint date will LOVE El Loro. I am a food snob and complete foodie. I have been going here for years. El Loro is AUTHENTIC Mexican food made in a Mexican run kitchen. ALWAYS a pleasure, NEVER once had a bad meal in dozens of meals ordered and eaten. GREAT drinks as well! More then 5 stars!

Don't be afraid of the white chip dip. It might not be Mexican, but it's definitely delicious! I live in Los Angeles (Minnesota born and bred), and allegedly have access to some of the most amazing and authentic Mexican food available stateside. Why, then, am I so excited to eat Mexican food in Minnesota? One word - cheese. California Mexican is filled with Colby Jack . Minnesota Mexican is filled with Asadero, Queso Fresco, and Quesadilla cheese. There is nothing like it, and once you have Mexican food prepared with it, you will feel cheated when you don't get it. Enough of my cheesy rant. I have been coming to El Loro since I was in 8th grade, when my Spanish class took a lunch field trip to test out our linguistics on helpless waiters. The staff is attentive and welcoming (seriously, what more could you ask for?) and I love the food. Highly recommended - Pollo Loco (chicken covered with what equates to a cheesy shrimp fajita mix and served with rice and beans). Ground beef soft taco. You may think this is hard to get wrong, but this tasty fellow comes in the softest little flour tortilla I have ever had the pleasure to eat. Smother it with their red salsa. You will die happy. Cadillac Margarita. It comes in, like, a goblet. Chile Poblano- I have never had better. It's not spicy, so don't be afraid. Chicken Enchilada - shredded white meat chicken awesomeness in a corn tortilla covered in a rich red sauce. This food is down-home and good. The restaurant has ridiculous Mayan murals everywhere that make me want to go on vacation. The waiters have been there a lifetime and never forget a face. I love it I love it I love it.

When I worked for the Place That Shall Not Be Named, some of the management staff went to lunch here every. single. Wendesday for "Taco Wednesday". They obviously love it, or maybe the lack of options around makes it the best choice. I'm not saying it's bad, it's A-OK just like the rating says. I joined a few times over the 16 months and never had anything bad but didn't feel like anything was spectacular. I would NOT recommend the taco salad as the refried beans they put in the bottom were runny and made for a very odd salad. The service was always fast and the other items I tried were just fine with me.

This is one of our favorite restaurants in Coon Rapids. Reasonable prices and great tortilla chips before the meal. Variety of items on the menu and the lunch prices have great deals. Average service for what we have received at a restaurant in Coon Rapids. Portions are huge, have had to use a to go box each time.

Possibly the best Mexican restaurant in the North Metro area. Fresh ingredients and great flavors. Excellent experience....I have nothing negative to comment and I highly recommend.

I can't agree with the first poster that this is the worst that I've ever had (that distinction falls to Acapulco Grill up the street) but this isn't that good either. I'm not sure what the white sauce is that they serve with the chips (I have never been served this in Mexico or in the Southwest....). The entrees are better than Acapulco and the Mariachi band on Thursdays(?) is a nice touch, but overall there are better places to eat. I would choose Don Pablo's over them in a pinch and would make the trip down to Boca Chica when I had the time (long drive for me, but well worth it).

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
